One thing i get told alot from clients i train is that they want to be bigger, stronger, lose weight and generaly be fitter.
You dont have to have a personal trainer to know what your goal is but once you have chosen the reason why you are training are you measuring if you are progressing in your new goal? Most people probably dont and might give up because they are not reaching their desired goals and this is because there is no measurment of any sort to see progress.
So my advice would be whatever the reason your training and goal you have track what your doing.
As an example if your goal is to get fitter and run a mile in 7 mins, your first workout you might jog a mile in 15 min. Write that down. Your second workout might be done in 14.59. This is progress and its being measured. This is a great tool for you to look at and positively see your getting closer to your goal.
You should do the same with lifting weights to. Recording reps and sets and weight.
Try it and in a month look back to when you starting tracking you will be pleasantly suprised with your progress and this will encourage you to keep going!
      Good luck.

While we all want to push for big improvement in fitness, durability, etc would you recommend setting small short-term goals which are achievable? Would this give someone like myself confidence to look at the longer term goals?

Finding a balance between pushing yourself with a new training program but having targets which are achievable can be tricky.

      Yes
Yes smaller goals will help. Work your goals out in blocks of 4 weeks and measure your progress from there.
      Good luck.

These are the simple questions I have been asking myself for many years. Sometimes I have been too embarrassed to ask anyone else but it is good to know others feel the same.

How quickly do you think your body will start to lose excess fat when you start to exercise? I would like to start fairly light training to tone up and then move on to bulking up.

To lose excess fat you have to take a look at your diet. If your diet is on track and your doing the correct exercise you can start to burn fat pretty much straight away. Depending on how much weight you have to lose will be the factor in how quickly you will see results.
Just to point out lifting light weights does not tone you up. Muscle tone or muscle at a relaxed state is only noticeable if you have muscle. To gain muscle you have to have built some. Building muscle only comes if its overloaded with heavy weights not light.
      I hope that makes sense.
      Good luck

Thanks Tom that makes perfect sense, I think I need to sort my diet at the same time as sorting my future exercise regime.
