Whether you’re new to the gym or have been training for years, it’s easy to rush into a workout and forget the basics.

A quick check before you start can make the session more productive, help reduce silly mistakes and make sure you’re not just winging it.

Here’s a simple checklist to run through before your next workout.

      ✅ Before You Start
      • Have you eaten enough to fuel the session?
      • Are you hydrated?
      • Have you packed what you need?
      • Do you know what you’re training today?
      • Have you got a rough plan for sets and reps?
      ✅ Warm-Up
      • Spend 5–10 minutes getting moving.
      • Warm up the muscles you’ll be using.
      • Do a few lighter sets before your working weight.
      • Don’t jump straight into heavy lifts cold.
      ✅ Technique

      Before each exercise, ask yourself:
      • Am I using decent form?
      • Can I control the weight properly?
      • Am I lifting properly, or just chasing numbers?
      • Would this still look okay if someone filmed the set?
      ✅ During Your Workout
      • Focus on good reps rather than rushing.
      • Rest long enough between sets.
      • Keep drinking water.
      • Track your lifts if that helps you progress.
      • Pay attention to the difference between effort and actual pain.
      ✅ Before You Leave
      • Did you complete what you planned?
      • Did you improve, match last time, or at least train with good effort?
      • Rehydrate.
      • Make a quick note of anything to change next time.
      The Bottom Line

A good workout doesn’t need to be perfect. Most of the time, it just comes down to turning up prepared, knowing what you’re doing, and training with some consistency.

What would you add to this checklist?
