      Hi,

I am a 46 year old married man with 3 kids and a dog :)

My weight has steadily increased over recent years to the point where I am now a little concerned. I work far too many hours, sat behind a computer, and need to:-

      Lose weight
      Improve my fitness
      Improve my work/life balance
      Revamp my diet

I would like to use this forum as a way to cover my journey from start to....finish so that I can look back and see how far I have come. I also hope it might be useful to others in my situation.

Welcome to the forum. You are in the correct place to get advice for your goals.
You have taken the first step by wanting to make a change. If you post how much weight you want to lose and what your diet looks like at the moment then we can help you get started with your goal.

      Thanks Tom

I have not weighed myself yet but I have been going out for lots of walks with my dog. Now it is time to get real with my diet and exercise.

My diet tends to be no breakfast, maybe a sandwich at lunchtime with crisps, mars bar and just lately grapes. Dinner tends to be the biggest meal of the day and can vary from pizza and chips to pasta and everything else in between. I am trying to wean myself off energy drinks as I know they are full of sugar and not good for calorie intake.

It would be a good idea to try and eat breakfast as this will help you to not crave sugary foods during the day. What you eat at the moment isnt the healthiest of choices.
You should try and eat more wholemeal foods and meats with no fat but most important eat regular times of 3 meals a day and if you have any snacks try to go for things like fruit or nuts. You can still eat things like pizza but eat them weekly as a treat instead of daily.
You can do workouts at home to increase some muscle tone using things like water bottles as weights for training.

Thanks Tom that is all very interesting. I would prefer to tone myself a little at home before I venture back into the gym - I used to go years ago but stopped. Am I the only one who is conscious of the way I look when going to back to a gym for the first time in ages?

I like the idea of rewarding yourself every now and again - just shows dieting doesn't have to be all bad :)

I have worked in gyms for many years at Management level and as a Personal Trainer. I have worked in high end state of the art gyms and backstreet gyms. I can understand that you feel the way you do about using a gym but let me tell you that you will be more aware of your body than any one else. If anyone is in the gym they will be more concerned about themselves than you. In the gym people go to get there body and health better. No one should feel concerned, if anything it will inspire others so if you want to go do it for yourself and at the end of day forget them do it for you.
Diets can be easy when understood. The last thing anyone should do on a diet is starve themselves. This can be the reason many give up. If your going on a diet its a good idea to get professional advice from a qualified Nutritionist. It could cost money but will be worth it in the end.
      Tom.
