      They told me to do 3 hours at the gym a day for rapid weight loss is that a good amount of time?

      And what do you define as "time" at the gym?
      I think 3 hours is pretty excessive no matter what you do though. Unless you were training for endurance and did some slow, steady state stuff.. but even then you wouldn't do that often.

      You also don't have to do A LOT of different things. I usually only do 3, sometimes 2 exercises a day and it works almost every muscle in my body and I am damn pooped afterwards and can usually take a nap right after.

      i.e. 5x5 back squat, 7x1 clean and jerks

      or
      deadlift, overhead press, pullups..

      Since all exercises require lots of muscles to work at once and in conjunction w/each other, the caloric output is close as a workout of something like w/6 exercises: bench press, incline, decline, dumbell flys, cable push downs, skull crushers.
