Get it off your chest, set small short term goals for yourself as you will feel good for achieving them. Dont bullsh1t your doc either, tell him/her straight. I spent too many gloomy months due to telling everyone what they wanted to hear untill i finally hit a bad low point. Hopefully the change you've made in quitting will help you on your way. How many financilal commitements do you have?
