  • Bulking at 30% Surplus... ???

      I'm bulking at 30% surplus for getting close to 2 months. 1:1 protein to pounds, focusing on carbs and eating enough fat to stay healthy... no stress eating what I want when I want. I got to 30% using the force really--as an experiment. So far body-fat holding steady, if not down a smidge. Should I back off to Emma's recommended 20%?.. is what I'm doing wise? I mean, so far so good but I'm new to this as it's my first bulk.

      jk brah. depends on what 30% is... for me that'd be about 700-800 cals, and according to lyle mcdonald (well known physiologist, knows his stuff, not sure if you're aware on him) if you gain over a pound a week it's more fat than muscle - but some people fulk it out for a little, cut and are happy with the end result. all up to you really but most people wouldn't advise going over a 500 kcal surplus if you want to keep your gains relatively lean... just my .02

      If you're not gaining eat more...if you're gaining too much, eat less.

      Simple. The stickies are estimations, and we can't figure your body out for you.

      Strong dreamer bulk. You probably think your bf% is down because you're no longer holding as much water. I'd really scale it back to 10-15% surplus in all honesty.

      Sorry... I made a mistake... It's actually 25%.. 675 surplus. I went down to 20% for almost a week and the scale stopped moving. But I'm new at this so I wondered if the gains happen in waves or something as opposed to small daily increments?

      It sounds as if you are likely not tracking calories all that close, or you miscalculated your TEE, because if you were truly eating at a 30% surplus for two months, by definition you would have gained weight.

      So if you are trying to bulk either increase your food intake and wing it, or recalculate your TEE and begin keeping a better track of your intake. My suggestion would be to get your new TEE and add 20% and monitor.

      I drink the exact same amount of water every day, and measure fat every few days with calliper and also tape for waist measurement consistently for about 50 days. No change that's for sure. My only question is the possibility that one will come or that I'll trigger one. (btw, I've been 157 for almost 20 years before this, no matter what I ate).

      I track religiously to the calorie and I've put on 10 pounds. And sorry... it's a 25% surplus.
