      Most people say health.

But if we're honest, that's not always the whole story.

      Confidence?

      Attracting a partner?

      Getting stronger?

      Recovering after a difficult period?

Wanting to prove something to yourself?

What was the real reason you started?

It's interesting how often the answer changes when people are completely honest.

Many people say they started training for health, but when you dig a little deeper, confidence, appearance, self-esteem, stress relief, proving something to themselves, or recovering from a difficult period in life often played a part too.

What's also fascinating is how those reasons evolve over time.

Someone might start training because they want bigger arms or to lose a few pounds, but years later they're still training because it helps their mental health, keeps them active, gives them structure, or simply makes them feel better about themselves.

For those who haven't posted yet, I'd be interested to know:

What was the reason you first walked into a gym?

And has that reason changed over the years?

Some great stories already in this thread. Keep them coming.

I wanted to look good and honestly, be sexier. That's the truth.

Although many call health care the primary cause, most people come to the gym for self-confidence, a desire to change the reflection in the mirror, or just to prove their own strength. For those who are looking for a softer, but no less effective way to improve their shape and relieve tension without heavy iron, pool classes are perfect: https://betterme.world/articles/calories-burned-water-aerobics/. After all, it doesn't matter what was the first push — the main thing is that this step triggers systemic changes in your life and daily well-being.

Did you succeed or is it still a work in progress for your goals?

I've succeeded but I'm always working to stay healthy and look how I'd like to look. Fitness is for me (and presumably others) is an ongoing journey.

For me it definitely wasn't health at the beginning.

I was skinny, had very little confidence and hated seeing photos of myself. I remember thinking that if I could just put on a bit of muscle I'd feel better about myself.

Funny thing is, after a while, the way I looked became less important than how training made me feel. Now I actually miss going to the gym if I haven't been for a few days. It's become part of my routine, and it's a great way to switch off after work.

I'd say I started for appearance, but I stayed for all the other benefits.
