Are Nutritionists Dumb or am I?

      This x2

I am helping someone right now that was recently diagnosed with type II diabetes, he was in no way interested in a barrage of nutrition advice and calorie counting. I have gradually introduced more and more information, but reducing his carb intake is what we focused on first. His blood sugar is under control, he has been taken off one med already with a goal to get rid of them all. He informed me today that he has lost 20lbs after weighing yesterday. He is exactly what KoolDrew describes above and it's all a part of a bigger strategy, he just doesn't necessarily know the whole strategy yet. For many this works best, at least at first.

      Good post Drew!

I saw a presentation from a "leading nutritionist" who seemed to all but ignore energy balance/calories in vs calories out. She also seemed to advocate a "one size fits all" type approach with eating x amount of servings of these foods if you're a man, that - a small % if you're a woman.

Was disappointed but not surprised at all about the crap she spouted.

I saw your thread title in the nut forum and instantly thought "nutritionist is dumb", it's hard not to be cynical when there is so much information out there (but I just have engaged a highly qualified nutritionist who I know offers much more than just a parroting of the current conventional/populist approach, so there are noteable exceptions worth mentioning).

One problem is that anyone can call themselves a "nutritionist"! Not so with an RD!

      Agreed from my observations.

I don't know if "nutritionist" is the right name for the professional I've just engaged, they're actually a well credential'd doctor, surgeon and researcher who is highly respected over here (kind of pumped to get into the nitty gritty with them).

My experience most personal trainers and nutritionists tell their clients to do stuff that they will be willing to do. That's why the ones I see at the gym have people that have never been in a gym doing concentration curls. I'm not criticizing them or anything because most wouldn't have clients if they just made them do compound lifts to start. Just explaining what probably is the case here.
