Looking at investing in some quality footwear.
What's out there that are flat and will help with my squats and deadlifts?

I bought a normal pair of trainers to be honest with a completely flat, rigid and thin sole. Great for squats but when deadlifting I just do them in socks or barefeet.

Fair play Ewen, I deserved that.
Think my current footwear (running shoes) are possibly why my patellers are giving me jip.
Going to take a look now.

Addidas Ironworks or the modern varient for a raised heel.

If you want to invest some cash the Metal squat boots are popular (but not necessary).

I would just get a pair of Lee Coopers the chuck taylor rip offs for about £12 from sports soccer.
