      Didn't know where to post.
      My friend tells me that someone who is 140 pounds could not lift over their body weight on lat pull-down because of Physics.
      I said it's possible if you're strong enough and can handle the weight you're trying to pull.

      He says this:

      " That girl is lighting weights, not on lat pulldown lol.. And I'm not making any comparisons to weight and strength.. Just stating when there's nothing holding you down there's a greater upward weight than down weight meaning the person will be lifted upwards it's not like gym knowledge., it's general science :p like two weights on a see saw.. Obvs if you're held down then it's not a problem but if that was the case I'd be able to do more than what I do XxXxX"

      That's what the rollers that go on top of your legs are for. Hold you down.

      Pulldown is a sh1t excercise anyway. Chins and pullups would be better.

      You can, you just need to keep your legs locked in nice and tight.

      But some machines you can strap in to stop this from happening anyway.

      I agree in the main, but you can use pulldowns as assistance to get some extra volume in whilst specifically targeting the lats. Strapping up to take the arms / biceps out of it helps. I normally use pulldowns for some high rep sets after I've done weighted pull ups / chins.

      I remember trying it at a holiday hotel gym & I was just lifting up in the air because the bench didn't have a padded bar to keep your legs locked down. You can also do the stood up straight arm pull down version & if the weight is extreme you'll just have to anchor your feet into straps on the floor. You'd have to be bloody strong though.

      Well i can pull down 150kg and weigh about 105-110kg so it's well possible.

      It's Newton's 3rd law of motion. For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction. If the machine is set at 140 pounds, he needs to pull down with 140 pounds of force. The equal and opposite force is an upward force of 140 pounds hence the need for the leg restraints.
