Training priorities often change with age. When people first start out, the main goal can be lifting as much weight as possible or changing their appearance quickly. Later on, staying mobile, avoiding injuries and maintaining strength may become equally important.

For those training in their late thirties, forties, fifties or beyond, what has become more important to you?

Have you changed your warm-up, exercise selection, training frequency or approach to recovery? It would be interesting...

Arms seem to be one of those areas where people can train consistently without seeing much visible progress.

Was there one change that finally made a difference for you - more weekly sets, heavier compound lifts, better exercise form, training biceps and triceps more frequently, or simply eating more?

I’ve also wondered whether people spend too much time changing exercises instead of progressing with a smaller selection. Cable pushdowns, overhead extensions, curls and close-grip pressing...

ok so i was just thinking people say 5x5 for strength and 3x8-12 (lets call it 3x8 to make things simpler).

so yes 5x5 for strength and 3x8 for hypertrophy - theres just something thats niggling away at me about this. surely, even though people go on about 5x5 for strength, if you can bench 100+ kilos for 5 your not going to have a small chest? same goes for legs, someone who can squat 150k parallel or below isnt going to have small legs.

the other thing is the maths (total poundage...

I’ve seen quite a few people mention that their lifts are improving, but they can’t see much difference in their physique.

If someone is steadily getting stronger but doesn’t appear to be building muscle, what is usually holding them back? Is it more likely to be their diet, total training volume, exercise selection, or simply expecting visible results too quickly?

I also wonder how much progress can be hidden when someone looks at themselves every day. Strength gains must suggest that...

Recovery often becomes a bigger part of the conversation when people continue training into their forties and beyond. The objective may still be to build muscle and increase strength, but repeating the same routine used twenty years earlier may not always be the best approach.

Some people reduce their weekly training volume, while others continue lifting just as frequently but pay greater attention to sleep, nutrition, warm-ups and rest between demanding sessions. There is unlikely to be...

Wrist Straps: These are designed primarily to improve grip strength during heavy lifts. They consist of a strap that wraps around your wrist and the barbell or dumbbell. They provide extra support by reducing the risk of losing your grip. Wrist straps are particularly useful for deadlifts, rows, and pull-ups.

The experts kept coming back to the same basics: train consistently, eat well, sleep properly and recover enough. Everything else was described as more of a bonus than a necessity.

It made me wonder if social media has made fitness seem far more complicated than it really is.
Every week...
