Most of us probably know that tuna has levels of mercury that supposedly make it unsafe to eat every day. Well why can't we just farm tuna? I know that some species are massive over 4 metres in length but yellowfin tuna are smaller and could quite possibly be farmed in a tank of water tha isnt contaminated by mercury and other heavy metals. They already do this but surely the costs of farming them would be offset by some of the costs of having to actually fish them?

Going from wikipedia sounds like it might be a bit tricky

Farming: Japan is both the biggest consumer and the leader in over tuna farming research.[14][15] Kinki University of Japan first successfully farmed already-hatched bluefin tuna in 1979. In 2002, they succeeded in breeding them, and in 2007, the process was repeated for a third generation.[16][17][18] This farm-raised tuna is now known as Kindai tuna. Kindai is a contraction of Kinki University (Kinki daigaku).[19]

i think it has to do with tuna being a very fast moving pelagic (ocean going) fish.........i dont think farming lends its elf to all species.........plus fish are farmed IN the sea....in enclosures not tanks but that is irrelevant as the cadmium and mercury accumulates from the food they eat .......tuna eat smaller fast moving fish - maybe they would not be tempted by pellet food....might not suite their feeding phychology....few ideas for you to research and mull over
