Last night a big rig parked in the alley in back of my house, his truck idled for probably around 7 hours.
It is hot here at night and could hear his air conditioner in his sleep over cab (cabover) kick on and off during the night.
In the morning he drove off.

      Question.
His truck idled all night, is that ok for a truck to do this?
If so does it cost much money for the truck to do that?
      Is this common?

There is no need to have it idling whilst you are asleep, the heating should cycle without having the engine turned over

He was wasting fuel........killing the planet........you should have made a citizen's arrest

Those things have fridges, tv's xboxs the lot in there I can only assume he wanted to keep it all running, not sure what the law is in the u.s but in the uk we are only aloud two drive. Max of 90 hours a fortnight maximum split 54 to 36 hours so he could have been on his taco limit!

Air con won't work with the engine off.. Modern units have fuel fired heaters.. But aircon isn't generally needed over here
Guessing this is America we are talking.. He's obviously done it to keep cool, as far as I'm aware over there they are mainly owner drivers so I suppose he was happy enough to eat that bit of his profits to keep cool.

As far as if it's ok goes, the tug lorrys used for shunting where my dad works run 24-7 and only get turned off for refuelling and they are fine!

Well it is summer time here. It was kind of warm last night, so I assumed it was on to run the air conditioner.
I assume he/she slept in the truck as to protect the belongings.

Wonder how much it cost to run the motor for seven hours.

At american fuel prices not a lot, they idle at 500 rpm tops so I wouldn't imagine much.
