i'm currently trying to cut, i weight 144.2 and have a 12% body fat. i was following the Katch-McArdle formula in the stickied post in this forum, and i cannot get the numbers to work out to the point where i'm eating at a deficit of 500 calories a day (about 20% of my TDEE) while also getting all my macronutrients and i think i am being as efficient as i can with my food choices.

so, my calculations had me needing a minimum of 157g of protein/day, 57g of fat/day and 288g of carbs/day. my TDEE came out to 2400 cals which means i'm aiming for 1900 calories a day but when i try to hit all of those numbers i end up at just under 2400 calories a day and am still 15g under my carbs minimum. i almost have to think i am doing something wrong here...

i've attached a breakdown of what diet i came up with and how much everything adds up to if it helps to see.

Someone smarter will come along and correct me if I'm wrong, but your deficit should come off your TDEE and NOT your BMR. Hope that clears some up : )

      your math is wrong.

      157g protein = 628cal
      57g fat = 513cal

      628+513=1141cal

      leftover cals based on 1900cal total = 1900-1141 = 759cal

so you can have 759 cals worth of carbs.. which is (759/4) = 189g

edit: to clear up above posts... I think he meant TDEE when he said BMR. You took your BMR and multiplied by an activity factor to get 2400... I hope.

      1. you don't have a carb min/max, that's all personal preference.

      2. I'm assuming by BMR you meant TDEE...a BMR of 2400 would be high as hell

      3. How tall are you? 144 pounds and cutting isn't usually good unless you're short as hell

This was my exact thought. 144lbs and cutting doesn't sound very smart to me.

i am cutting to get my BF% near 7-8% so i can see my abs, as that has been the BF% i needed in the past to see them. once I get to that point i'm going to start bulking. is that a bad idea?

What's your height...unless you're decently shorter than I am, then yes I'd say so.
