Noticed it yesterday, had some trouble walking, lots of cramps in legs and fingers. Had a bit of pain in the lower back too, so thought maybe discs pinched nerves, which is why it feels like the legs are disappearing, but think it's actually a burn-out of the nervous system. There has been constant drama and things I have done for about ten years in a row now, I guess it had to come. Never experienced that before, thought something was wrong, I get cramps just combing my hair. If I sit on the PC and listen to music, it becomes too much, so I have to regularly lie on the sofa, otherwise it's just like my legs disappear. Does it take a long time to recover? I read online that it takes 3 months to recover, if the nervous system is exhausted, but it also said one year
Hey, Thanks for sharing your experience—it sounds like you’ve been through a lot, and recognising it might be nervous system burnout is already a big step forward. The symptoms you’re describing, like the cramps, back pain, and that overwhelming feeling, can be really unsettling, especially if you’ve never experienced anything like this before. Recovery timelines can vary, and it’s hard to pin down an exact timeframe since it depends on how long you’ve been pushing yourself and how much rest and care you can prioritise now. Some people start to feel better in a few months, but for others, especially if the stress has been constant for years, it can take longer. Here are a few things that might help: Rest Is Key: Allow yourself to fully rest without feeling guilty about it. It’s hard when you’re used to being active or productive all the time, but it’s essential for recovery. Gentle Movement: If you feel up to it, light stretching or walking might help with the cramps and circulation. Nothing strenuous—just enough to keep your body moving without adding stress. Nutrition and Hydration: Make sure you’re eating nutrient-rich foods and staying hydrated. Magnesium and potassium might help with the cramps, but it’s worth consulting with a professional for personalised advice. Mental Recovery: Activities like mindfulness, journaling, or even just listening to calming music (in small doses) could help ease your nervous system. It’s also worth speaking to a healthcare professional if you haven’t already, especially with the cramps and back pain you’re feeling. They can rule out anything else and guide you toward the best recovery plan. Take it slow and be kind to yourself—it sounds like your body is asking for a reset after everything you’ve been through. You’re not alone in this, and you’ll get through it with time and care. Wishing you a steady recovery!
Burnout recovery depends on how well you rest and reduce stress. Focus on relaxing, eating well, and staying off your feet when you can. Professional advice might help too.
Burnout recovery varies on the person, their physical condition, what type of workout, etc..For me if I do burnout sets of anything I need approx two days, sometimes three to fully recover. I'm in my early 40's so as I/most people get older recovery times change.
