So finally decided to take the plunge and see the doctor about my anxiety.

Its really affecting me at work and socially as well.

Is there anything I should do/say to make him take me seriously or for him to give me the best possible treatment.

For example shall I lay anything in particular on extra thick so that I am not brushed to one side, (which I hear sometimes happens)

I am hoping to get some kind of medication

Anyone been docs themselves about this ?

I guess it depennds on the definition of being brushed off really, your gp might not prescribe medication as it might not be the best form of treatment. I would tell your gp that you suffer anxiety to the point of going to see them asking for help, wouldnt lay anything thick on as with mental health problems the only symptoms are really what the patient says, if you change what you are actually experiencing then you are really giving a gp different symptoms to try and asess.

      Those are my thoughts anyway.

Tell your GP exactly how you feel. Maybe describe some of your thoughts when you get anxious. Tell him how the anxiety affects you on a daily basis. And ask him, what you can do about it. Breathing meditation/exercises are helpful for anxiety.

These suggestions are based on personal experience. Good luck.

Im medicated for anxiety (amongst other things!)

I usually find that it's impossible to impress the affect and.distress anxiety causes the sufferer. Meds can and do help but they aren't a magic cure all (not that your expecting them to be) be prepared for, what can be, a tough couple of weeks/months. I've noticed a lot of people are just happy to get some medication and that positivity can by itself help knock anxiety on the head. Don't worry if the first pill or dose doesn't work keep on to your doctor until yoi get.medication that works for you. ;)

They are very tight about giving out benzos these days for anxiety alone.

Tend to only prescribe for drug withdrawal etc. You will probably be fobbed of the first time mate unless you lie

Very true. Despite having a bit of.a history my Dr still only prescribes certain medicine like lorazepam at a max of 14 a time.

you will given citalopram, maybe 10mg. i think 75% of the nation are on them at one point.

depending on what you say you may even be offered counciling.

take the drugs, it will give you breathing space. time to reflect and sort stuff out.

It might be a good idea to write down how you feel etc so that if when you get into the surgery you get really anxious you have your list to refer to. That way you won't come out wishing you had said more.
I hope you get the help your looking for
